David Banney

“As a conductor, David Banney is simply one of the best in the country.” (Roger Woodward, AC, OBE, Concert Pianist)

Co-founder of the Newcastle Music Festival, and described in the Hunter Lifestyle magazine as “quite possibly the busiest and most multi-talented man in the Hunter”, David has established a significant profile as a conductor, composer, violinist and educator. David is Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral and the Artistic Director of the Christ Church Camerata. He has conducted many of Australia’s leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Queensland, Adelaide and West Australian symphony orchestras, Opera Queensland and the Queensland Ballet.

In 1995 David was named Australian Young Conductor of the Year. His compositions have been performed throughout Australia and in Europe, and includes music for orchestras, choirs, small ensembles and film. David is well-known to radio listeners in the Hunter through ‘The Banter’, a weekly chat show about music with Paul Bevan, which achieved more than 300 episodes.
