SARA CARVALHO

AT THE FESTIVAL

Sara Carvalho undertook undergraduate studies under the tutelage of Angela Giblin and postgraduate vocal studies with Celina Lindsley at the ANU School of Music, graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours). In 2004 she obtained her Master of Music Degree.
Sara received a Canberra Critics Circle Award and a Canberra Area theatre Award for Best Actress in West Side Story and Best Supporting Actress as Adele in Die Fledermaus.

Sara’s performances have included Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Le Feu in L’enfant et les sortilèges, Miss Silvertones in The Impresario and Adele in Jane Eyre (for Stopera in Canberra). She has performed in the Govenor-General’s St Andrew’s Concert and at “Beat the Retreat” with the Royal Military College Band (Duntroon). A member of Opera Queensland’s Developing and Young Artist Program, she sang the title role of Annabel in the chamber opera The Songbird and Papagena in The Magic Flute. She understudied the role of Echo/Aphrodite in Richard Mills opera, The Love of the Nightingale, and was a member of the Opera Queensland Chorus in Lucia di Lammermoor and Madame Butterfly.

Sara has a Diploma in Education and has taught in the ACT and NSW in both public and independent education sectors. Since moving to Newcastle in 2017, Sara has partnered with the Newcastle Youth Orchestra on many amazing projects, such as Green Eggs and Ham and most recently, the Australian Premiere of Arnold Schoenberg’s 7 Cabaret Songs, with the Newcastle Youth Orchestra Chamber Orchestra.

Sara is very excited to perform with Fernleigh Wind Ensemble in 2025 with the project, Symphony No 5 “Journey to Middle Earth by Johan de Meij.
